6027-5-23 - Cristal Gabrieli 5 Lt Chandelier
The superb technical skills and aesthetic tastes of the Venetian glassmakers on Murano are clearly evident in the exquisite glass shades on the Gabrieli chandeliers. Lattimo, the name given for translucent milky-white glass, was first produced inthe Murano glass works in the 16th century. The technique, which uses lead to color the glass, was developed specially for the decoration of clear glass. Over time, glass makers were able to achieve a variety of effects within the glass, the lattimo process now being molten for an overall texture evenly distributed throughout the glass. An early 19th century Murano invention, the golden dust technique, or introduction of gold leaf into the glass, continued to reaffirm the Muranese inventiveness. By skillfully manipulating the two techniques into one glass shade resembling an opening flower, the traditional characteristics of Venetian glass are still obvious, namely unsurpassed clarity, lightness of weight, brilliance of color, and ductility, which permits astonishing fantasy of form.
