These are a pair of [inexpensive] portable speakers. I think they accomplish this goal really well, but I have seen negative reviews on this product, not all of the criticisms being fair. So, I am going to try to address these points:
1. Lack of a wall output. These are not intended to be a primary pair of speakers; you can certainly use them as that if you'd like, but it wasn't their created purpose. These are "travel" speakers...which one can only assume means you are likely to not have access to a wall jack where you are using them. I have yet to change my batteries, and I've used them for more than 50 hours of playing time.
2. No independent volume control. This is easy-- no matter what device you plug these into, it is going to have a volume control. Do you expect your other travel speakers, also known has headphones, to have a volume control? It's the same idea.
3. Sound quality. I personally think their sound is great, for a twenty dollar pair of speakers. This is the part you have to stress. These are about as cheap a pair of new speakers as you are going to find! Audio is one of those places where you *will* get what you pay for. Just be glad they aren't stuffed into the gutted body of some unfortunate stuffed animal.
Just keep these things in mind as you consider the purchase.

I wanted a set of speakers for my Mac laptop, primarily for listening to audiobooks & public radio news programs on the road. I'm a musician, so do listen to music a bit with them, but for work, not pleasure; and I don't crank up the volume, partly because I have normal hearing (and want to stay that way), but mainly because I use these in hotel rooms. All that said, these are just fine for what I wanted. It's a huge improvement over the Mac speaker, both in volume and quality-- I don't need or desire a lot of bass, unlike another reviewer here, but this gives plenty for a natural sound in speech or classical music. My gripes: a bit heavy and bulky for a "travel" product; and for the sake of the environment, I hate to have to use batteries. For $20, though, these are a great deal, and do the job.

I thought the sound was loud enough but audio starts becoming distorted at just half the maximum volume and is horrendous when cranked all the way up. Phillips boasts excellent bass, but I did not notice this - because the distortion kills everything. The speakers themselves are also somewhat awkward for a portable device. While true, you can hear your ipod through the speakers even when the unit is off (or with no batteries), the volume is too low to be useful. Suffice it to say, I will be returning this unit.

Awful sound. Have had it for a month. Songs blare out and sound completely horrific at about 1/3 volume. For "portable" speakers, they're extremely bulky and are way too awkward to carry around in a backpack. Also, the first day I plugged it in, one of the speakers wouldn't work. Yes, it was properly connected to my iPod. I gave it a second chance and the other one ended up working, but it hardly mattered because it can't handle volume very well or bass at all.
I did like the length of the cords, however. But's not even worth $20, if you ask me.

It sounded pretty good to me at first. It was fairly compact, but still bulky b/c of the roundness. After two months it got so distorted i had to throw them out. Wouldn't buy these again.

I've had my Phillips speakers for about 9 months now and I am satisfied with the sound quality and durability that they've given me. It has only been recently that the jack that connects to my Phillips mp3 player has become a little touchy and sometimes cuts out. But for $20... they've lasted longer than I envisioned. Good item to sit on your desk at work. I'll most likely buy them again when these finally give up the ghost!

I wasn't too impressed with the sound but I figured it would to the job, but about two weeks after I bought them they broke. There was so much static and distortion that I couldn't even hear the music anymore.

I bought these for my Creative Ven Vision M: A they were above my expectations for a cheap set of speakers! Louder than I expected and very portable. Nice Job, Phillips!

I bought these speakers looking for something fairly cheap that would just play my music louder than my headphones did. Although these did play louder, one of the speakers broke a week after my warranty was up. A few days later, the other also broke. I was very disappointed in the quality of this product.

i was looking for something cheap, small and decent for my creative zen vision:M mp3 player so i could listen to my music at work. i found these at [at another retailer] in black and they serve the purpose and are well worth the price. they aren't that loud (depend on what you're plugging them in to though), but wow, what a bargain and decent sound, too. you won't be disappointed. no batteries needed, either.
