This is a great product for an older-style case, without front USB connections. My Motherboard has 2 unused USB headers built into it, so this was the perfect solution to easy-to-reach USB interfaces. The unit is solidly built, mounted easily, and was recognized & usable as soon as I repowered the system.

Very thoughtful and simple design. I too had to uncover the blocked 10th pin hole on the female connector to mate it with the male 9-pin connector on my Iwill motherboard. (Be sure to check the pin assignments on the female connector and your motherboard if in doubt.)

This is one of the nicest kit's I've used - The hardware looks and feels first class. I think they have tried to anticipate many possible installation options and provided hardware for them. I bought two more after I installed the first because I thought it was a nice kit. I have installed others of much inferior quality and am happy with this one

Cool little gadget that adds a lot of convenience to the PC. Very handy because it comes with two different style cables in the box making hookup a snap.

I am very pleased with this product. I bought it to add some front-panel USB ports to an older case (and a similarly aged motherboard). After it arrived I also decided to use it to hold the 3.5'' floppy drive since having the drive in that location would make setting up the cables in the case easier. Everything ultimately worked out fine. Two things prevent me from giving the product a full five stars. First, the mounting holes for the frame are just a bit off relative to standard mounting holes in most cases. The difference isn't huge, but it does make it impossible to have the face plate flush with the case. In my case the face plate is recessed by ~3 mm. The second problem I faced was the 9-pin Intel connector did not work on my older board, which was set up for a pair of 5 pin connectors. I ended up having to reverse the order of the pins on one side of the connector and to open up the blocked the tenth pin hole. Nonetheless a useful product.
What Are BUS POWERED USB Devices?
USB was designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a standard
interface port, and to improve the plug-and-play features of PCs by allowing
these devices to be connected and disconnected without rebooting the
computer! Another convenient feature includes providing power (also known as
Bus Power) to low-consumption devices without the need for an external power
supply. So Bus Powered means the device is powered by the USB Port, and not
an external power adaptor.
Bus Powered devices offer a lot of flexibility, particularly when used on
laptops and other portable devices. However, you need to determine when “bus
power” is best.
When is Bus Power best?
You have a desktop with ample USB ports, or
You have a laptop and you need to take your
Bus Powered devices with you, or
You only use the device intermittently and
want the simplicity of no external power adaptors, or
You want to keep desktop clutter to a
minimum, and want to eliminate power cables.
The best example of a USB Bus Power devices
are: USB Thumb Drives, or Passport style USB Hard Drives.
Rules for best results with Bus Powered
Devices:
Use a good quality USB Cable two feet or
less in length.
Be sure to directly connect the device to
your computer, instead of through a hub or other device - unless the USB
Hub has its own power.
Make sure your laptop battery is fully
charged.
Generally speaking, you do not want many
Bus Power devices connected at once, especially on portable devices or
laptops running on batteries. So consider unplugging unneeded devices if
necessary.
Some devices can be powered both by an external adaptor or by Bus Power. As
a general rule, you should use the external adaptor to power the device,
except when you need to use it and external power is not available. However,
higher-consumption devices, such as external optical media burners, and
large hard drives, may work best with external power.
What Is USB 2.0?
USB 1.1 was great when it was introduced almost a decade ago. But
the newer USB 2.0 transfers data dramatically faster - up to 40 times
quicker. Plus, USB 2.0 provides additional bandwidth for multimedia and
storage applications, which are growing larger every year. Also to your
advantage is the fact that USB 2.0 is forward and backward compatible with
USB 1.1, which means that cables and connectors made for the original USB
configuration will also work perfectly in a USB 2.0 port, though some newer
devices are specifically designed for USB 2.0. It is always a good
idea to verify the version of USB supported by each device you want to use.
