NComputing L230 Computer Access Terminal
Like all NComputing access terminals, the new L230 and L130 dramatically cut computing costs by sharing the untapped power of standard PCs. Best of all, IT staff and end users do not need special training because our solutions are easy to manage, eco-friendly and compatible with standard PC applications. And like all of our L series, the L230 and L130 can use standard Ethernet infrastructure, so that your users can be located as far away from your shared PCs as you need them to be.
The new L230 and L130 bring enhanced graphics performance (with improved color depth and widescreen support) and a microphone port―all in a stylish new smaller chassis (just 1 inch tall and 4.5 inches square) that takes absolutely no desktop space at all when mounted to the back of a monitor. We even include the mounting bracket at no charge.
Of course, the L230 and L130 include VGA support (resolutions up to 1280x1024 or 1440x900 for widescreen), an Ethernet connection, PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, audio output, and power cable connections. The L230 also has a USB port for flash memory devices and an audio input for microphones. The L130 does not have the USB port or microphone input and is recommended for the ultimate in economy and security.
Configuration
With the NComputing solution, each user has an individual workstation that consists of a standard monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers (not included). However, instead of connecting directly to a PC, these peripherals connect to the L Series access terminal.
The very inexpensive and highly reliable L Series access terminal connects to our terminal services software on the host PC over standard Ethernet cables (plus routers, switches, etc.). Our terminal services software enables the host PC to create unique and simultaneous user sessions so that each user gets their own rich and robust PC experience. A PC that is running a desktop OS (such as Microsoft Windows XP®) can support up to ten users. Server operating systems (like Microsoft Windows 2003 Server® or Linux) support up to 30 simultaneous users.
L Series Benefits
Share one host PC with up to 30 users
Dramatically reduces acquisition & support costs
Easy to set up, maintain and secure
Connects to host PC via Ethernet
Supports Windows and Linux
Compact, reliable & energy-efficient (no moving parts)
Web-quality multimedia support
nComputing's optional NControl and NShield software add more centralized management capabilities―such as remote monitoring and host PC data backup.
By delivering all the key components of this multi-user computing system, NComputing uniquely delivers a high-performance solution at the lowest possible cost. NComputing breaks the affordability and complexity barrier that has limited computing from being deployed everywhere, to everyone.

Seems to work as stated. Despite the other reviewers comments, this works very well with optical mice. Video... could be better however it is acceptable. Plans are to outfit the rest of our network with this device. I would hope ncomputing would add a gigabit port though???? How about it where is the gigabit edition?

We have four L230 units on our network. One of them is using a 22'' wide ViewSonic monitor and it does display properly. Also have installed HP laserjet printers on the L230 USB port, and printing works just fine also. The L230 users have been able to utilize all of our software so far. We are using Microsoft and Logitec optical mice with no problems (refer to an earlier reviewer's problem).
You will need a robust little server for your L230 terminals. We have found that 512 Mb of RAM per L230 needs to be available on the server. Otherwise the whole system slows to unusable speeds. If you are using an XP based server, be aware that the 32 bit verstion of XP will support a maximum of 4 Gb of RAM, so you are probably limited to 8 users per server. We have experimented on servers using both XP Home and XP Pro with no apparent difference in usablility.
Overall, we are happy with the product and plan on adding a few more units.

We have bought 8 L230 for a network one came to us
bad, but that is not what is the problem.
The main problem is that none of the L200 and L230
units work with optical mice ps2 or usb with or without ps2 adapters.
So i called Tiger support and told them of my problem. I was asked '' What do you want me to do about that?'' in a condescending tone.
So i said can you give me a list out mice that do work with these units?
Support responded with no we are just a reseller of this product and we do no product testing.
Take a look at this link http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1870109&CatId=3509
Logan has no mention of any incompatibility issue's?
We have a wide range of optical ps2 mice here M.S. and Logi plus no-name here and nothing works but
a ball mouse.
So i contacted the manufacture NComputing for guidance they said that they should work with all
PS2 style optical mice, So i said well can you tell me the model you use. They said NO.

It is a nice and useful device. But its server software update is too out dated. Windows XP had an update on April 16. After the update, an error message kept popping up to inform me to drop the Hotfix of the Windows update since the conflict may result some terminals could not start. Luckily all my terminals are functioning OK. Now it April 30, 2 weeks, there are still no updates for its server software to adapt the Windows update. This should happen to a device cost this much. On its manual, it asks you to wait for its update before you update your Windows. One or two days delay behind the Windows update is acceptable. It is already 14 days after the Windows update, you expect me to risk my system to wait for your update? If there is an attack on my system due to my delay of updating Windows to wait for its update, will NComputing take the responsibility? Its technical support response is very slow. Go to the forum on its website, a lot of complaints.

Decent performance, I am using 5 of these on a wireless setup across a campus. You cannot remote view the users screen when unit is set for 24 bit. I have a usb printer connected to the unit and it seems to work well (Ncomputing does not support this setup, but it will work) Unit mounts directly to the back of most lcd monitors, really nice idea, gets rid of much clutter.
