Worked just fine out of the bubble pack. This unit is so small it can fit into a pocket sized mint can with the cord.
I use Ubuntu 8.04 or Hardy Heron (Debian Linux) and the card was mounted as a drive in just a few seconds. The program F-Spot automaticly loaded the content of the SD Card with no problem.
I was able to use the Gnome File Manager to access the card just like any other drive or USB device on my computer.
For the money this is a great deal. I am happy with the purchase.

I bought one of these recently for use with my Nikon D50 and Sandisk Ultra 3 memory card. I had a hard time getting the USB cable to fit the reader, then it took almost 5 minutes to download 2 pictures and then gave me an error saying that my memory card was corrupted and the data (135 jpgs and 135 NEF files) was lost. Desperate, I tried downloading direct from the camera, I found the data was intact and the ENTIRE download was complete in 10 minutes. This device clearly doesn't not excel in all applications, and for me was a complete waste of time and money.

I received mine a few weeks ago and have been unable to read any of the cards I have tried (SD) on three different computers and two different operating systems.
Since this card reader does not work, I have to carry my other one back and forth to work.

What a piece of junk the Sabrent Flash Memory Card Reader is. I had over 800 pictures on my XD card and insterted it into the usb drive to see all 800 pictures then a windows error message stating that the drive had an error reading the card and the next thing I know I only have 10 pictures left on the card. I lost my whole two vacation photos!!! I did not have a backup of these as that's what I was trying to create and why I used the Sabrent Flash Memory Card Reader. What a piece of junk the Sabrent Flash Memory Card Reader is. I am sooo pissed.

What Is USB 2.0?
USB 1.1 was great when it was introduced almost a decade ago. But
the newer USB 2.0 transfers data dramatically faster - up to 40 times
quicker. Plus, USB 2.0 provides additional bandwidth for multimedia and
storage applications, which are growing larger every year. Also to your
advantage is the fact that USB 2.0 is forward and backward compatible with
USB 1.1, which means that cables and connectors made for the original USB
configuration will also work perfectly in a USB 2.0 port, though some newer
devices are specifically designed for USB 2.0. It is always a good
idea to verify the version of USB supported by each device you want to use.
